The Most Shared Tweets During #MalaysiaBerkabung #MH17 Arrival Ceremony

The following images represent a selection of the most-shared tweets during the arrival ceremony welcoming home the remains of 20 Malaysians who were killed in the crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17. The ceremony took place at the Bunga Raya Complex of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) today at 9am.

It was a day of mourning for the country and many users expressed their remorse on Twitter. This summary is based on 283,754 tweets collected from 7am – 1.30pm. We have confined the list to personal messages and not retweets of news updates.

Sentiment Analysis on Selangor Menteri Besar Crisis

We performed opinion-based sentiment analysis on 2,062 users who tweeted about the Selangor Menteri Besar crisis from August 9th – August 15th 2014. These users were randomly selected based on tweets we collected since the crisis began. Spammers, news agencies and accounts with automated tweets were not included in the sample.

Our goal initially was to gauge public opinion primarily on whether to keep or remove Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim. However mixed opinions emerged that allowed us to gauge responses to other parties involved e.g. Pakatan Rakyat (PR), Wan Azizah and Anwar Ibrahim. We were also able to gauge support for the State Assembly to be dissolved and state elections called.

Initial Responses on Twitter to Selangor ADUNs Pledge of Support for Wan Azizah

On August 14th 2014 12.50 pm PKR and DAP held a press conference where Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah (ADUN Kajang) announced that 30 ADUNs supported the move to replace Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim with Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah. The ADUNs were comprised of 13 from PKR, 15 from DAP and 2 from PAS. This means that Pakatan Rakyat had the support of 30 / 56 ADUNs.

Popular Response On Twitter To Khalid Ibrahim’s Termination of State Exco

On August 12th 2014 Tan Sri Khalid (Selangor Menteri Besar) announced that he had fired all six state executive councillors (exco) from PKR and DAP. This action followed the announcement by the six state executive councillors that all decisions made by the exco be put to a vote, in order to limit the functions of the Menteri Besar. Following this the exco chose to recognise the termination as illegal and pledged to continue working as usual.
